Indy Road Course Fantasy NASCAR Top Tier Elite Picks
Chase Elliott
Indy Road Course Fantasy Spin – Chase Elliott is the premiere road course racer in NASCAR, and at the Indy Road Course, look for Elliott to finish in the top five and compete for the win. On this track type, Elliott is a 7-time winner and since 2018 minus Sonoma 2019, Daytona RC 2021 and last year’s race at the Charlotte Roval, Elliott has a 2.6 average finish and in 13 of those 15 races, he’s finished in the top five. This year at road courses, Elliott has been one of the best. Over the combined events, Elliott has the 2nd best average finish (4.7), the 2nd best Total Speed Ranking and ranks 2nd for Speed Late In A Run.
Indy Road Course Track History – Last year at the Indy Road course in the tracks debut, Elliott was one of the best and “Performance Wise”, I would rank him as being the 2nd best. In the race, Elliott finished 4th, had a 4.8 average running position, had the 2nd best driver rating and had the 3rd best Total Speed Ranking. With 14 laps to go before late cautions and mass mayhem ensued, Elliott was running in 2nd behind Kyle Larson. I’ll also note, late in the race Elliott had a slow pit stop which cost him quite a few positions.
Kyle Larson
Indy Road Course Fantasy Spin – At the Indy Road Course, look for Kyle Larson to be a contender. Larson was the class of the field last year, and this year at road courses he’s been strong. Over the last two races held on this track type, Larson has without a doubt been one of the best. You could argue that Larson was potentially the driver to beat at Sonoma (pit strategy put him back in the field and then his tire fell off) and at Road America he finished 3rd and had the 3rd best Total Speed Ranking. Over all three combined 2022 road course races, Larson ranks as the 6th Fastest Driver Late In A Run and has the 7th best Total Speed Ranking. On Sunday, look for Larson to finish in the top five and be a contender to win.
Indy Road Course Track History – Last year at the Indy Road Course race, I think Kyle Larson was the class of the field, and if there weren’t late cautions that were followed by late mayhem, I think he would’ve emerged victorious. In the race, Larson finished 3rd, had a 3.7 average running position, led a race high 28 laps, earned the best driver rating and had the 2nd best Total Speed Ranking. Over the segments, Larson’s speed rankings were 2nd, 1st, 1st and then 9th. With 14 laps to go before a late caution came out which changed the complexion of the race, Larson was the race leader.
Ross Chastain
Indy Road Course Fantasy Spin – At Indy RC, look for Ross Chastain to be a factor. Chastain has proven himself to be an elite road course racer and in 2022 on this track type, a strong case could be made that he’s been the best. This season at road courses, Chastain has a series best 4.0 average finish, a series best 6.4 average running position, the best driver rating, the best Total Speed Ranking and ranks 3rd for Speed Late In A Run. In the results column, Chastain raced his way to victory lane at COTA, finished 4th at Road America and at Sonoma, Chastain spun but still managed to finish 7th. On Sunday, look for Chastain to finish in the top five and compete for the win.
Indy Road Course Track History – Last year at Indy RC, Ross Chastain finished 29th, but that’s an asterisk mark result. His average running position was 16.8 and “Performance Wise”, I would say that represents how he ran. With 14 laps to go until the scheduled distance and all the late mayhem that ensued, Chastain was running in 13th. In the lap 77 “Track Failure Big One”, Chastain was caught up in the carnage that doomed him to a poor result. Over the segments, Chastain had speed rankings of 17th, 14th, 16th and then 27th.
