Indy Road Course Race Fantasy NASCAR Front Runner Rankings
Chris Buescher
Indy Road Course Fantasy Spin – If you’re looking to roll the dice on a dark horse for Indy RC, then Chris Buescher could definitely be the driver for you. This year at road courses, he’s been fast and in the last two races on this track type he’s come home with results of 2nd (Sonoma, tied for the best Total Speed Ranking) and 6th (Road America, 6th best Total Speed Ranking). Over the 20 races held at road courses since 2017, Buescher has a 13.5 average finish, and he’s only finished outside the top 20 once, and that result was a 21st. On Sunday, I’m going to view him as a teens driver who has top ten potential.
Indy Road Course Track History – Last year at Indy RC, Chris Buescher finished 12th, but basically like every driver right around this finish range he was aided by attrition. In the race, Buescher had a 22.8 average running position, the 26th best Total Speed Ranking and was running in 24th with just 14 laps to go until the scheduled distance before mass mayhem broke out at the end.
Austin Dillon
Indy Road Course Fantasy Spin – Austin Dillon has been extremely solid at road courses, so don’t overlook him. Since COTA 2021 on this track type minus Indy RC 2021 where he crashed like everyone else and Road America where he looked low double-digits good before his afternoon went south late, Dillon is 7 for 7 at finishing between 10th to 15th and has a 12.4 average finish. In his two incident free races at road courses this year, Dillon has results of 10th (COTA) and 11th (Sonoma). On Sunday, I’m going to view him as a mid-teens driver who has upside.
Indy Road Course Track History – Last year at Indy, Austin Dillon finished 31st, but take note he was a victim in the late carnage. In the race, Dillon had an 18.4 average running position, the 21st best Total Speed Ranking and was running in 22nd with 14 laps to go before all the late mayhem ensued. Dillon survived the “Track Failure Big One”, but during the first lap of overtime #1 while he was running around 13th he crashed.
Kyle Busch
Indy Road Course Fantasy Spin – Kyle Busch is one of the premiere road course racers in NASCAR and last year he was a top five contender at Indy RC, but after his clunker performances at road courses this year, I don’t know how you can pick him with any level of confidence. I guess he has out of sync potential and JGR will fix their issue at some point, but so far, I haven’t seen any indications this is the race, and we probably won’t know until actual race conditions on Sunday. This year at road courses, Busch is 3 for 3 at finishing between 28th to 30th and his Track Type Total Speed Ranking is the 20th best. On Sunday, I would just view him as a teens driver who has top ten potential, but I’ll note that’s being quite generous.
Indy Road Course Track History – Last year at Indy RC, Kyle Busch was one of the best and was clearly a top five contender, but his afternoon went downhill late when he was caught up in the “Track Failure Big One.” With 14 laps to go until the scheduled distance (lap 68) before all the late mass mayhem ensued, Busch was running in 6th. On lap 77, Busch crashed like many others when the “track failure” happened and that doomed him to a 20th. In the race, Busch was the 2nd Fastest Driver Late In A Run, had the 4th best Total Speed Ranking and had a 10.6 average running position.
