Asterisk Mark Report – Indy Road Course
AJ Allmendinger – AJ Allmendinger raced his way to victory lane last year at Indy RC, but by no means was he that good. By his own words, Allmendinger said he was an 8th to 10th place driver. Also in the race, Allmendinger got a speeding penalty on lap 39 which dropped him from the top ten back into the 30’s. If the late “Track Failure Big One” and other wildness didn’t ensue at the end, I think he was poised to be a low double-digit to mid-teens driver.
William Byron – William Byron has been collecting asterisk marks on a week-to-week basis the last few months, and last year at Indy RC, he had an extremely misleading 33rd after crashing in the lap 77 “Track Failure Big One.” In the race, Byron started on the pole, led 1 lap, had the best Total Speed Ranking and was running in 3rd on lap 68 which was 14 laps to go before all the late mayhem ensued. In our member exclusive PROS Rankings, I have Byron down for having the 3rd best car.
Kyle Busch – Kyle Busch was a top five contender last year at Indy RC, but he was a victim in the lap 77 “Track Failure Big One.” With 14 laps to go until the scheduled distance (lap 68) before all the late mass mayhem ensued, Busch was running in 6th. On lap 77, Busch crashed like many others when the “track failure” happened and that doomed him to a 20th.
Erik Jones – Erik Jones finished 7th last year at the Indy Road Course, but that result is a testament to the level of attrition that occurred. In the race his average running position was 23.6 and with 14 laps to go until the scheduled distance he was way back in 26th. On Twitter, here’s a look at his X-Ray chart.
