Ty Gibbs
Gateway Fantasy Spin – At Gateway, I think Ty Gibbs will be a top ten contender. The #54 is running well and performing at a high-level everywhere right now, and at Richmond, the most recent shorter-flat track visited he finished 9th and had the 11th best Total Speed Ranking.
Gateway Track History – In the Cup series, Ty Gibbs has never competed at Gateway.
Bubba Wallace
Gateway Fantasy Spin – At Gateway, I think Bubba Wallace is a low double-digit who has a great chance to sneak in a top ten. That matches up with how he performed last year at Gateway prior to getting spun, and his 14th at Phoenix this spring where there’s correlation (16th best Total Speed Ranking). Heading into the weekend, Wallace currently has three straight top fives.
Gateway Track History – Last year at Gateway, Bubba Wallace finished 26th but I’ll note that’s a misleading result. “Performance Wise”, I think he was realistically about a mid-teens driver, but his race wasn’t incident free. On lap 88 he was running in 14th, but then shortly after that during a restart on lap 101 he was spun. Wallace didn’t appear to hit anything but after that he never ran nearly as well. In terms of Total Speed Rankings, Wallace ranked 28th but take note his speed over the segments were 15th (incident free), 28th, 29th and then 30th.
Corey LaJoie
Gateway Fantasy Spin – At Gateway, Corey LaJoie will have his chance to shine, and he’ll be driving the #9. On Sunday, I expect LaJoie to be a teens performer at the end of the day but at some point, I think he’ll flirt with a top ten. Ultimately, remember we are talking about Corey LaJoie here.
Gateway Track History – Last year at Gateway in the tracks debut, nobody had a shorter race than Corey LaJoie and he finished last (36th) due to an engine failure. “Performance Wise”, LaJoie was realistically mid-twenties good at best. On lap 55 he was in 27th, but then shortly after that his race was over when the #7 engine blew up. In terms of Total Speed Rankings, LaJoie ranked 26th over the first quarter of the race.
