Asterisk Mark Report – Watkins Glen
Chase Elliott – Last year at Watkins Glen, Chase Elliott finished 4th, which is a great result, but I’ll note that’s an asterisk mark finish. If a late caution didn’t come out while he was leading, Chase Elliott had the race all but won. That late caution then led to Elliott getting body slammed on the restart by Kyle Larson which cost him a few positions.
Kyle Busch – Kyle Busch looked sporty last year at Watkins Glen but finished an asterisk mark 32nd. In the race, Busch started in the back, finished 9th in Stage #1, finished 2nd in Stage #2 but then during the Stage #2 caution he was penalized for pitting outside of his box. Busch rallied back and was up to 9th on lap 73, but then that lap he spun and hit the wall which led to his asterisk mark result. Over the first three segments of the race, Busch had speed rankings of 8th, 3rd and 11th. If his race would’ve been incident free, I think he was clearly a top ten contender.
