Charlotte Roval Confidence Rankings / Post Practice Predictions
On Sunday, NASCAR will be racing at the Charlotte Roval to wrap up the Round Of 12, with four more drivers getting eliminated from title contention. “Desperate drivers do desperate things”, so you know the wildness will be off the charts. This weekend, Stage break racing is returning so that will open up a new wrinkle to road course racing in 2023.
On Saturday, practice was held for the Charlotte Roval. Teams only had 20 minutes, and keep in mind teams have different agenda’s (some want to focus on long runs, some just want to feel out their car, some might focus on qualifying etc.). Make sure you check out our Charlotte Roval Practice Notes and Charlotte 5 and 10 Lap Average Speed Cheat Sheet.
Here’s the Charlotte Roval Qualifying Results/ Starting Lineup
Charlotte Full Field Fantasy Rankings
1) Tyler Reddick
Start 1st / Projected Finish Range 1-6 / Dominator Potential – High
Charlotte Roval Outlook – At the Charlotte Roval, polesitter Tyler Reddick will be tough to beat. Reddick’s one of the premiere road course racers in NASCAR and he’s performed at an elite-level at the Charlotte Roval. This year at road courses minus Chicago and Sonoma, Reddick has 1-win and a 4.3 average finish. In terms of 2023 Track Type Total Speed Rankings minus Chicago, Reddick ranks 2nd. In practice, Reddick was a stopwatch standout, having the best 5 and 10-lap averages. Reddick was also really happy with how the #45 performed.
Charlotte Roval Track Record Breakdown – Tyler Reddick has been one of the best at the Charlotte Roval. At this hybrid track, Reddick has a 7.3 average finish and he’s had a result in the top 12 every race. Last year, Reddick was one of the best but finished a slightly misleading 8th. In the race, Reddick had the best average running position (3.1), earned the 2nd best driver rating, led 21 laps and was running in 4th on lap 103 before late chaos kicked into gear. In terms of Total Speed Rankings, Reddick ranked 2nd. In 2021, Reddick finished 2nd, ranked as the fastest driver late in a run and had the 4th best Total Speed Ranking.

2) Chase Elliott
Start 8th / Projected Finish Range 1-6 / Dominator Potential – Medium-High
Charlotte Roval Outlook – Chase Elliott will be tough to beat at the Charlotte Roval. Elliott’s a 7-time road course winner, and I would argue the Charlotte Roval is his best road course. “Performance Wise”, I think Elliott could easily have 4 straight Charlotte Roval wins but he currently has back-to-back asterisk mark results. This year at road courses, Elliott has been strong and minus Watkins Glen, Elliott’s average finish is 3.3. In practice, Elliott really liked his car. and emphasized it was really good in the turns.
Charlotte Roval Track Record Breakdown – Chase Elliott has been the premiere performer at the Charlotte Roval. Elliott currently has back-to-back asterisk mark results but over all five combined races (among drivers who competed in every race), Elliott has the best average finish (8.0), the best average running position, the best driver rating and he’s averaged leading the most laps per race (18.8). Last year, Elliott had the best car but finished an asterisk mark 20th. In the race, Elliott led 30 laps but while leading late and having the race all but won, late cautions broke out which eventually led to Elliott getting spun out and finishing 20th. In the race, Elliott had the 3rd best driver rating, the 3rd best average running position (5.3), ranked 2nd for Speed Late In A Run and had the 4th best Total Speed Ranking. In 2021, Elliott had a great car but finished an asterisk mark 12th. In the race, Elliott won Stage #1, finished 2nd in Stage #2 but then on lap 55 while he was in the process of working his way up thru the field because of pit strategy, Harvick wrecked him. In 2020, Elliott didn’t have an incident free race either, but that didn’t stop him from reaching victory lane. In the race, Elliott finished 2nd in Stage #2, but right when the final Stage was going green, he came to pit road because of a loose wheel. Despite his problem, Elliott led 27 laps, had the best driver rating and had the 4th best Total Speed Ranking. In 2019, Elliott crashed while leading in the final Stage on lap 66 during a restart when he locked up his brakes, but he hit the afterburners from that point on and raced his way to victory lane. In the race, Elliott finished 9th in Stage #1, won Stage #2 and led the most laps (34). In 2018, Elliott finished 6th.

3) William Byron
Start 14th / Projected Finish Range 1-6 / Dominator Potential – Medium
Charlotte Roval Outlook – At the Charlotte Roval, look for William Byron to be tough to beat. Byron smoked the field at Watkins Glen the most recent road course visited, he’s been fast at the Charlotte Roval having the best Total Speed Ranking in 2 of the last 3 races and there’s no question he’ll be going all out since he’s already locked into the next Round. When practice concluded, Byron was happy with his car in the infield portions but wanted more rear grip.
Charlotte Roval Track Record Breakdown – William Byron has been one of the best at the Charlotte Roval and in 4 of the 5 races, he’s been a top 8 contender. Last year, Byron just had a mediocre afternoon and finished 16th. Additionally, Byron had the 13th best Total Speed Ranking and a 15.4 average running position. Over the three Charlotte Roval races prior to that, Byron had a 7.7 average finish and the best driver rating. In 2021, Byron finished an asterisk mark 11th but “Performance Wise” the #24 was one of the best. In the race, Byron had the best Total Speed Ranking, led the most laps (30), had the best average running position (5.2) and the best driver rating. Unfortunately, the final Stage was anything but incident free for Byron. On lap 90 while battling for 2nd, Byron missed the chicane which dropped him back to about 11th (had to stop on the track) and then on lap 107 after he battled back up to 3rd, Byron lost control of the #24 and spun into the grass which led to his 11th. In 2020, Byron finished 6th, was tied for leading the most laps (27), earned the 3rd best driver rating, had the best Total Speed Ranking and ranked 2nd for Speed Late In A Run. In 2019, Byron led 23 laps, finished 6th and had a 6.5 average running position. In 2018, Byron finished 34th but take note he was running in 8th at the time he was collected in the late restart “Big One.”
