Asterisk Mark Report – Las Vegas #2 2023
Alex Bowman – Last fall at Las Vegas, Alex Bowman was a top ten contender but he finished an asterisk mark 35th. On lap 145 while running in 9th, Bowman got into the wall hard which marked the end of his race, dooming him to his poor result. In terms of Total Speed Rankings, Bowman ranked 12th.
Ty Gibbs – Last fall at Las Vegas, Ty Gibbs finished 34th but you can get out an asterisk mark for that result. “Performance Wise”, I would say Gibbs was a low double-digit performer, but multiple problems led to his misleading result. In the race, Gibbs started 11th, finished around 17th in Stage #1, finished around 13th in Stage #2, was up to 11th on lap 214 (53 to go) but then two laps later he blew a right front tire and lost a wheel. Later, Gibbs had more problems, but his race was essentially over at that point anyways. In terms of Total Speed Rankings, Gibbs ranked 13th.
Chase Elliott – Chase Elliott wasn’t good by any measure last fall at Las Vegas but you do need to get out an asterisk mark for his 32nd. “Performance Wise”, Elliott was a high-teens performer but during a restart with about 50 to go while running in 19th he got a restart line violation penalty. Additionally, Elliott had the 26th best Total Speed Ranking and had a 27th place average running position.
