Sonoma Group 1 NASCAR Driver Notes

William Byron – Byron had a fast car and had good pace over a long run. Byron had the best 5 and 10-lap averages in Group 1. Jamie McMurray felt like Byron was the best of the group. Despite being fast, Byron told his team that he’s struggling for grip. Byron said the track is so different from last year. Byron said he was happy with his day during an interview following qualifying.

Michael McDowell – In the opening minutes of practice, Michael McDowell was shown to have had a harmless spin. The #71 had the 2nd best 5-lap average in Group 1. McMurray liked how the #71 looked over a long run. McDowell said he’s close to being in the game. His car got better over the course of practice.

Daniel Suarez – Daniel Suarez unloaded fast and had the best overall speed in Group 1. In Group 1, Suarez had the 4th best 5-lap average and the 2nd best 10-lap average (just four drivers). Suarez said that his car was good.

Brad Keselowski – Brad Keselowski had pretty good long run pace in Group 1. His 5-lap average ranked as the 2nd best in the Group. Keselowski had a harmless spin in practice.
