Dover AAA 400 Fantasy NASCAR Front Runner Rankings
Carl Edwards – Dover has historically ranked as one of Carl Edwards best tracks. He’s only won here once but he does have a 10.6 average finish. Recently at Dover Edwards has been in a tough stretch and has only finished in the top ten once in the last six races. This spring he had a competitive top ten car but his race wasn’t incident free. In the race he had two problems on pit road that cost him a good result. The first problem was when he left his pit stall on lap 163 with equipment. At that time he was running around 10th but he was fortunate that a caution came out later that lap so he didn’t have to serve his penalty under green. His next pit road problem came on lap 254 when he was busted speeding. After that you could stick a fork in him. When the checkered flag waved he finished 19th. Last fall he finished 11th but he was a complete non-factor despite his respectable result. He started 18th, had a 16th place average running position and earned the 15th best driver rating. In June 2014 he started in 29th, had a 17th place average running position, earned the 18th best driver rating and finished 14th. In fall 2013 Edwards didn’t have an incident free race. He finished 15 laps down in 35th. His poor result was due to hub issues. If he didn’t have that problem based on how he performed he likely would’ve finished around 13th. (Yahoo B Driver)

Jeff Gordon – Dover has been a good track for Jeff Gordon. In five of the last six races he’s finished in the top ten. This June he didn’t like the feel of his car but escaped with a 10th place finish. Also in the race he earned the 13th best driver rating and had a 14th place average running position. Last fall Jeff Gordon raced his way to victory lane and got his 5th win at the Monster Mile. In that race he was a consistent front runner and after Kevin Harvick had problems he was the driver to beat. Over long runs he was able to reel in everybody who was in front of him until he got the lead. Of the final 96 laps he paced the field for 94 of them. When the checkered flag waved Gordon earned the best driver rating and had a 3rd place average running position. In spring 2014 Jeff Gordon had one of the best cars at Dover but walked away with a 15th place finish. That result doesn’t do a good job reflecting his level of performance. Minus the last 40 laps he looked like a lock to finish around 5th. What happened is that late in the race he lost the handling of his car. In the three Dover races leading up to the event he scored the most points and had results of 2nd, 3rd and 4th. (Yahoo A Driver)

Ryan Newman – Early in Ryan Newman’s career he was “money in the bank” at Dover winning in 3 of his first 6 races. Recently at Dover he’s run well and if it wasn’t for problems he could easily have three straight top tens. This spring he ran well but finished a misleading 18th. The reason for his lack luster result can be traced to him having speculated loose lug nuts and pitting twice around lap 250. That issue dropped him three laps down to 29th. Prior to that issue he was running just outside the top ten. Last fall Newman had a solid afternoon. He started in 20th and slowly crept up to his 8th place finish. It should also be noted in the event he had a 12th place average running position and earned the 14th best driver rating. In June 2014 he finished 31st but you can put an asterisk mark next to that result. In the event he had an up and down day. He started in 14th and in the first third of the race he was a low twenties performer. By lap 118 he found himself a lap down. Then later in the race after he got the Lucky Dog he started to rebound. Unfortunately his race wasn’t incident free. On lap 320 he said his transmission was stuck and that issue sent him to the garage. At the time of his trouble he was running around 9th place. In fall 2013 Newman had a solid race. He started in 3rd, had a 6th place average running position, earned the 7th best driver and finished 8th. (Yahoo A Driver)
