Darlington Bojangles Southern 500: Fantasy NASCAR “Mid Pack” Projections
Jamie McMurray – McMurray does good on skill tracks and he’s coming into the Bojangles Southern 500 with back to back top ten finishes (2nd in 2010 and 9th in 2011). McMurray isn’t a Top Tier Elite driver at Darlington but he’s an excellent sleeper pick. His 2012 results may not show it but he’s been solid this year. At intermediate tracks he’s finished in the top fourteen in every race except for California (got a pit road penalty). Darlington isn’t similar to any of those tracks but I’m showing you that the #1 team has been proficient to fantasy racers this year. (Yahoo! B Driver)
Marcos Ambrose – Ambrose has improved each time he’s raced at Darlington. His finishes are 33rd, 25th and 13th. I think Ambrose has more potential here than many would assume. Dover is somewhat similar to Darlington and last year Ambrose finished 9th and 3rd. Early in his career he also struggled at Dover but he improved each race with experience. One attribute about Ambrose that stands out at Darlington is his qualifying prowess. In his three races he’s qualified 10th, 7th, and 6th. (Yahoo! B Driver)
Kurt Busch – If Regan Smith can win here then why can’t Kurt Busch? The circumstances would need to be right but if there’s a late caution like there was last year I think the #51 team would stay on the track. They’ve bypassed pit road opportunities already this year so if need be they would do it again. Kurt Busch has had some notable success at Darlington. He finished second to Ricky Craven in 2003 in one of the craziest finishes ever. In eight out of the last twelve races at Darlington Busch has finished 13th or better. Darlington is a skill track so his equipment disadvantage shouldn’t be a huge deal this weekend. (Yahoo! B Driver)
