Pocono GoBowling.com 400 Fantasy NASCAR Front Runner Rankings
Ryan Newman – Fresh off his Indy win Newman is getting a bump is his rankings for the Pocono GoBowling.com 400. Earlier this season Newman played the pit strategy game better than anyone. In the event he started in 23rd and ran in the twenties for about the first 60 laps. Then during a caution he stayed out on the track and inherited the lead. From that point on he ran the rest of the event in the top five. That pit strategy could’ve burned him but it ended up working perfectly. When the checkered flag waved he finished 5th after leading 19 laps. Pocono has been a good track for Ryan Newman. He’s a former winner and has a 12.0 average finish. In the three races on the new surface he has the third best average finish (7.7), 5th best average running position (10.7) and has scored the 4th most points. In the last five Pocono races Newman has four top tens and hasn’t finished worse than 12th. Since August 2008 he hasn’t finished lower than 14th. (Yahoo! B Driver)

Carl Edwards – Carl Edwards had a strong car at Pocono earlier this season. Don’t be fooled by his 18th place finish. His poor result was self-inflicted and didn’t reflect his performance. His problems in the race started when he had a slow pit stop and took no tires. That led to him falling back in traffic. With about 30 laps left in the race he came in to pit and dropped all the way back to about 25th. In the closing laps he was able to drive up to 18th. Before his problems started he had a top five car. Through the first 60 laps I would say he had a 2nd place average running position. Last year on the new surface he had finishes of 7th and 11th. Pocono has traditionally been a good track for Edwards. In seventeen races he has two wins, 8 top tens and a 13.5 average finish. (Yahoo! B Driver)

Denny Hamlin – Denny Hamlin is always a popular pick at Pocono. Earlier this season he drove the #11 to an 8th place finish. In the race his car was slightly tuned down but he looked competitive against everyone not named Jimmie Johnson. In the race he had a 10th place average running position and earned the 11th best driver rating. If he started with better track position he would’ve been more competitive. In June 2012 at Pocono he started in 5th, finished 5th and led 21 laps. In August last season he didn’t perform nearly as well. In that race he started in 2nd, led 3 laps and finished 29th. His poor finish can be attributed to him getting collected in the last restart melee while he was driving in 15th. One strength of Hamlin’s at Pocono is qualifying. He has a 6.3 average start and if you exclude his starting position in June (qualifying rained out) then he would have 8 consecutive top 7 starts. The source of Hamlin’s Pocono popularity is his track record. In fifteen races he has 4 wins, 8 top fives and 10 top tens. One fantasy fact that should be noted is that he hasn’t finished better than 5th since his win in 2010. (Yahoo! A Driver)
