Yahoo! C List Fantasy NASCAR Preview – Pure Michigan 400

Austin Dillion – In the Pure Michigan 400 Austin Dillion will pilot the #14 in place of Tony Stewart. Earlier this season Dillion raced the #33 car at Michigan. He qualified 7th, finished 11th and earned the 15th best driver rating. Last June he made his first start at Michigan and finished 24th. In Dillion’s six other races this season he has a best result of 21st and a 27th place average finish. In June Tony Stewart drove the #14 to a 5th place finish.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. – Ricky Stenhouse Jr. is once again one of the best default Yahoo! C picks. Roush Fenway cars are strong here and in theory he should be better this time around. In June he started in 15th, had a 17th place average running position and finished 16th. That’s his only start at MIS. For the season on this sub track type he has a 22.2 average finish and has yet to have a top fifteen result.
Trevor Bayne – Trevor Bayne had his best finish at Michigan in June. He started in 25th, had a 19th place average running position and finished 15th. His next best finish at Michigan was his first in 2011 (16th). His other finishes are 24th, 24th and 43rd. This season on high-speed intermediate tracks he has finishes of 15th (Michigan), 16th (Charlotte), 18th (Texas) and 23rd (Las Vegas).
Casey Mears – Look for Mears to finish around 20th in the Pure Michigan 400. This isn’t a track where sleeper teams can perform the best. Earlier this season he started in 24th and finished 21st. Also in the race he earned the 25th best driver rating and had a 23rd place average running position. His best finish this season on this track type came at Auto Club Speedway which is Michigan’s sister track (15th). This season on high-speed intermediate tracks minus Kansas (wreck) he has a 22.8 average finish and a 27.3 average running position.
Danica Patrick – If Danica Patrick can repeat her June performance fantasy racers would be happy. In June she had one of the best races of her career and finished 13th. I don’t know how she got that good finish but it happened. In the race she started 37th, had a 23rd place average running position and finished 13th. If you have to use her somewhere this might not be a bad venue to roll the dice.
David Ragan – Look for David Ragan to finish around the mid twenties in the Pure Michigan 400. In June he started 31st, had a 30th place average running position and finished 25th. In last season’s races he finished 23rd and 25th. This season on high-speed intermediate tracks he has a 26.7 average finish and a 30.1 average running position.
Brendan Gaughn – Brendan Gaughn will drive the #51 at Michigan. He last drove a Sprint Cup car here nearly a decade ago. In 2004 he had results of 33rd and 16th. I think the fantasy value for this Truck Series regular is very low. He’s never driven in a Gen6 car (at least not in a race) and in the four races he participated in last season he had a 31.5 average finish.

I think Gaughan in the 51 is a S-n-Park this race. Probably will until the sale of the team is final.. Not enough $$$ left in the kitty. Hope I am wrong but I think I feel a vibration already..

The team’s statement seemed to suggest otherwise. They have sponsorship from South Point Resort and Casino for the race.

That being said, like Ryan suggested, I wouldn’t expect the world out of him. Plus there are much better options as Ryan noted.

I think the bottom line of the week is to go Stenhouse Jr. and Dillion. It would be great if Stenhouse Jr. could get his first top ten of the season. For being the Nationwide Series champion in Roush Fenway equipment that’s gotta be a little embarrassing.

I hope you all are right and I just read the statement re; South Point but why would they hire Brendan Gaughn? I think Brendan is a fierce competitor but on a cookie cutter track like Michigan I think there would be better options..
Not to change the subject but I think Bayne may show some strength ie top 20, yes?

Gaughn is a casino man so it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s family money.
I think any of the top three in this weeks C list preview is capable of getting a top twenty.
