The Low Tier – Watkins Glen
Ty Dillon – Ty Dillon isn’t a very good road course racer. On this track type over his three combined starts he has a 26.0 average finish and a 25.5 average running position. At Watkins Glen, Dillon has one start under his belt and it ranks as his best overall road course race. Last year when the checkered flag waved he finished he finished 19th and had a 23rd place average running position. I will note I think his average running position is a better indicator for his level of competitiveness. At Sonoma in his two starts he has results of 28th and 33rd. On Sunday I would look for Ty Dillon to likely be a low to mid-twenties driver.
Bubba Wallace – I really don’t see a lot of upside in Bubba Wallace. Sonoma races differently than Watkins Glen, but he was so bad there. When the checkered flag waved at Sonoma he finished 29th and had a 30th place average running position. In the lower series you need to go back to 2016 to find his most recent start at Watkins Glen and that afternoon he finished 29th. I think unless you’re looking to pick somebody who no one else will pick, it probably isn’t a good idea to pick him.
Matt DiBenedetto – At Watkins Glen I would look for Matt DiBenedetto to be a mid to high-twenties driver. In both of his incident free races he’s finished in the high-twenties. Last year he finished 28th. In 2016 he was involved in a wreck and finished 34th. In 2015 when he made his track debut he had his best result and finished 26th. Earlier this year at Sonoma, the other road course on the schedule he had his best result on this track type and finished 17th.
David Ragan – At Watkins Glen, David Ragan has a 25.8 average finish. If you pick him I would look for him to likely finish around that mark. If things go really well I wouldn’t count him out for sneaking in a low-twenties finish. Last year he didn’t run well and finished 27th. In 2016 he finished 33rd after wrecking. In the four races prior to that he finished between 19th to 23rd. Earlier this year at Sonoma he finished 22nd.
