Daytona 500 Race Notes

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. who won the pole selected to start in the high-line. He led the opening 23 laps. He was very racy out front.

Erik Jones, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. dropped to the back near the start of the race. Them dropping to the back was by design and they worked with Hamlin and Bell who started back there.

The Fords were very strong early. On lap 4, Stenhouse Jr. was leading, but the next five cars behind him were Fords.

On lap 13 while running in 3rd, Aric Almirola said his car was driving very good. Joey Logano said Almirola had a great pushing car.

Notable Moment: On lap 21, the caution came out for rain. Shortly after that the Red Flag came out and the race was done for the day. It resumed on Monday.

During a pre-race resuming interview, Kyle Busch said his car has been pretty good.

Michael McDowell, Cole Custer and basically everyone near the back didn’t pit during the opening round of pit stops on Monday before the race resumed.

Notable Moment: Jimmie Johnson’s team had too many men over the wall during the opening pit stop which resulted in a penalty.

Notable Moment: During the rain caution before the race resumed, Corey LaJoie’s team was penalized for going over the wall too soon.

Big Moment: On lap 58, William Byron who was running in 4th crashed after contact from Stenhouse. This marked the end of his race.

During the Stage #1 caution, Joe Gibbs cars stayed out and were now positioned at the front of the pack.

Big Moment: On lap 90, Quin Houff and BJ McLeod crashed. They were running high-twenties and back.

  • Kevin Harvick had some damage to his car and he repaired it during the Houff/ McLeod caution.

Notable Moment: During the Stage #2 caution, Martin Truex Jr. nailed Chase Elliott’s gas can which was laying on pit road. This led to Chase Elliott getting penalized and having to start in the back for the restart. Martin Truex Jr. made an extra pit stop to check to see if there was any damage. Both Elliott and Truex just finished in the top ten in Stage #2. Kevin Harvick was also penalized for pitting too soon. He was repairing some damage that occurred earlier.

Notable Moment: With about 40 laps to go while running near the top five, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was black flagged for going below the yellow line. He had to serve a pass thru penalty.

With 30 laps to go, the final green flag pit cycle ensued. A group of Ford’s were the first cars to pit road.

Big Moment: With 28 laps to go, Stenhouse Jr. wrecked. No caution came out. Erik Jones got into the back of him which caused him to spin and it bent up his hood. His team was able to make timely repairs.

Big Moment: Erik Jones had a good amount of damage when he came to pit road with 25 laps to go to his rear quarter panel. Jones had contact with Stenhouse a few laps prior to this.

Big Moment: Kyle Busch’s car was smoking with 18 laps to go and he slowed on the track. It was an engine problem. He was just leading prior to his problem.

Big Moment: With 16 laps to go the big one ensued. Newman just pulled out to the lead and went in front of Keselowski and then Almirola turned the #2 which caused the carnage. Drivers collected were the 2,1,48,43,10,19,12,3,16,88,77,36,38,8,17,21,62,22,13

Big Moment: With 7 laps to go, Timmy Hill and Reed Sorenson crashed. Alex Bowman got more damage at this time. Bowman was in the “Big One” shortly before this.

Big Moment: With 2 laps to go, Ross Chastain crashed and it collected the 22,9,37,8,13,10,95 and 34.

Big Moment: Coming to the green at the start of overtime, Clint Bowyer and Michael McDowell spun. They were both running in the top 7.

Chase Elliott spun at the start of the final lap. He was running just outside the top ten at the time.

On the back straightaway on the final lap, Newman and Blaney powered ahead of Hamlin.

Ryan Newman wrecked coming to the finish line.
