Drivers who started in the rear of the field in a backup car: Brad Keselowski, Chase Briscoe, Kaz Grala, William Byron, Anthony Alfredo, Cole Custer and Ross Chastain.

Martin Truex Jr. started in the rear of the field because of a radiator change.

Daytona 500 Race Notes

Alex Bowman who started on the pole led the opening lap. It was the only lap he led all race long.

On lap 2, Kevin Harvick took the lead and he then led the next 16 laps.

Notable: On lap 3, Derrike Cope who drove the #15 crashed and brought out the first caution. He had a tire go down. Cope had contact with Bubba Wallace. Wallace then came to pit road for minor repair.

Big: On lap 13, a huge multi-car accident ensued. Drivers collected were the 19,43,77,48,21,8,10,17,12,24,6,20,1,36,38 and 99. Many of the cars were totaled. The accident happened when Almirola who was in 2nd got a push behind from Bell which sent him up into Bowman. Chaos ensued in their wake.

During the lap 13 “Big One” caution, the red flag came out for rain. The race then later resumed at night. Quite a few laps prior to the race resuming were run under yellow (Lap 15 to 29).

Big: On lap 111, shortly after a pit cycle so the field was somewhat jumbled up, Christopher Bell had a tire go down and during an out-of-control moment he had contact with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Both had quite a bit of damage. Kyle Larson also got some damage at this time. They were all running in the top ten at the time.

Big: During the Stenhouse/Bell caution, Kaz Grala’s wheel bearing (something along those lines) caught on fire. Something broke a few laps later and then his race was over.

On lap 170, the Ford’s all came to pit road to make their final pit stop.

Big: During the Ford manufacturer pit cycle, Austin Cindric had a slow stop and lost contact with his Ford teammates and lost the draft. Prior to his pit stop he ran in the top five.

On lap 171, the Chevy’s came in.

On lap 173, the Toyota’s came in. The Toyota’s came off pit road spaced apart, so they were sitting ducks when they returned to the track.

Notable: Christopher Bell made an unexpected pit stop on lap 180 due to fuel issues. He was running around the mid-teens prior to his problem.
