Chicago Race Notes

Prior to taking the green flag, NASCAR let teams to decide if they wanted to start on slicks or rain tires. Some parts of the track were still wet and rain was coming soon.

Known drivers who started on wet tires: Martin Truex Jr., Austin Dillon, Ryan Blaney, Joey Logano, Austin Cindric, Zane Smith

Ty Gibbs who started in 2nd led the opening 11 laps.

On lap 1, sprinkles were shown in the camera.

At the end of lap #1, some drivers were mentioned to have come to pit road including William Byron, Erik Jones and Josh Berry.

On lap 5 it was mentioned to be raining “Big Time.”

On lap 5, Michael McDowell ducked down pit road to get wet weather tires. He was in 8th.

Big: On lap 17, Corey LaJoie spun into a tire barrier which brought out the first caution. He was in 29th at the time.

Around lap 20 it was really raining.

Zane Smith who started on wet tires didn’t pit during the Stage #1 caution and got the lead.

Big: On lap 25, Bubba Wallace spun into a wall and was sideways on the track. This slowed down Suarez since he was stuck behind him. Wallace was in the top ten. Suarez was running round 12th.

Big: On lap 25, Chase Briscoe had a major out of control moment in the rain and slammed into the wall. He had contact with SVG in the process which had the #16 slapping the wall hard, ending his afternoon.

Big: On lap 26 a long rain red flag came out.

Big: On lap 31 back in the mid-teens, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Denny Hamlin were both backwards in the tire barrier. They were stopped for quite some time.

Big: On lap 34 while running in 3rd, Kyle Larson drove nose first into the wall on the wet conditions. This was the end of Larson’s race.

On lap 37, a race count down timer was announced to the teams for the race end (ended up being lap 58 of the 75 planned laps).

Notable: On lap 38, Josh Berry went hard into the tire barrier. Chase Briscoe also got into a tire barrier at this time too but in a separate incident. This dropped both of them to the back and no caution came out.

Notable: On lap 40, Ryan Preece was shown to have spun into a tire barrier but he was able to get going pretty quickly.

On lap 43 a lot of drivers ducked down pit road. It was a race for who could get on slicks first since the track was drying.

Notable: On lap 44, Austin Dillon got into a tire barrier.
