Pure Michigan 400 After Practice Fantasy Confidence Ranking Picks
1. Greg Biffle – When it comes to making a fantasy pick for the Pure Michigan 400 why not stick with the Biff? In the three races on the new MIS surface he has two wins and a second place average finish. Earlier this year at Michigan Biffle emerged victorious. He led 48 laps and earned the best driver rating. In the event I don’t think he had the best car but when his main competitors dropped out or had problems he was able to seize the opportunity. Last August he earned his first win on the new MIS surface. Nobody can say he had the best car in that race but when Jimmie Johnson blew up in the closing laps he was running in second and inherited the lead. In the inaugural race on the new surface he finished 4th. From a career perspective Michigan has been a great track for the Biff. He has four wins, has finished in the top five nearly 50% percent of the time and has a 11.3 average finish. This is a Ford track and he’s happy with his car and said they unloaded good. On Sunday Biffle will start in 16th, that’s three positions better than he started in June. My prediction is that Greg Biffle will win the Pure Michigan 400.
2. Dale Earnhardt Jr. – Michigan is arguably Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s best track. His two most recent wins have come here and as of late he’s performed quite well. Earlier this season at Michigan he had one of the strongest cars. He was able to drive up to the front of the pack and when he got there he paced the field for the second most laps (34 laps led). In the race he was robbed of a good finish on lap 131 when his engine blew up. His chassis will get another chance at victory lane because it will once again be used in the Pure Michigan 400. In 2012 he drove this chassis to victory lane at Michigan in the inaugural race on the new surface. Last August at Michigan he led 25 laps and finished 4th. This season on similar tracks Earnhardt Jr. has performed well but has had far to many problems. On Sunday Earnhardt Jr. will start in 7th. Today in Happy Hour Dale Earnhardt Jr. had the best 10 lap average.

3. Kyle Busch – Kyle Busch is a former Michigan winner and he has momentum following his win at Watkins Glen. What I really like about Kyle Busch is how strong he’s performed on fast high-speed intermediate tracks. On this track type when you look past the two races that he’s had problems (Kansas wrecked & Charlotte engine failure) then he’s won 40% percent of the races (2 out of 5) and has finished in the top five every race. At Michigan in June Kyle Busch was forced to drive up through the field after an early pit stop penalty and when the checkered flag waved he finished 4th. In August 2011 he earned his one career victory here. Auto Club Speedway is Michigan’s sister track and earlier this season at that venue he took home the trophy, led 125 laps and earned the best driver rating. In June the Toyota’s were tuned down but on Sunday they’re unleashing their horsepower. Look for Kyle Busch to come into the mix in the Pure Michigan 400. On Sunday Busch will start in 10th.
