Asterisk Mark Report – Las Vegas #1 2022
Denny Hamlin – This spring at Las Vegas, Denny Hamlin had the best Total Speed Ranking, and by his own words in a post DNF interview, he felt like he had the best car, but he ended up finishing an asterisk mark 32nd. In the race, Hamlin’s afternoon was far from incident free. He radioed his team that he felt like his power steering was broken while in 6th on lap 72, he had a slow pit stop while running in 2nd on lap 135, and then in the final Stage while running in 6th, he broke his transaxle on pit road. If Hamlin felt that good about his car, I’m confident the #11 was a hot rod and was going to be a factor. Despite that laundry list of problems, he still managed to lead 31 laps.
Ryan Blaney – In 8 of the last 11 Las Vegas races, Ryan Blaney has finished between 5th to 7th and this spring it looked like he had a good chance to extend that trend, but he finished an asterisk mark 36th. During the Stage #1 caution, Brad Keselowski took two tires which got him to the front, but then as he was fading back in the pack, he got loose and then Blaney ran into him which marked the end of the #12’s race.
Erik Jones – Erik Jones was poised to likely walk away with a top ten this spring at Las Vegas but his race wasn’t incident free. In the race he was running in 7th with 4 to go, but then the next lap he had a flat tire and spun which led to his asterisk mark 31st.
